Welcome Back from Retired Worker

After taking a summer break the Retired Worker Newsletter is back for the fall. We hope all our members and readers had a pleasant and safe summer. Please also note our new publishing schedule, the third Thursday of each month.

Retired Worker Updates

We've had a busy summer with lots of changes here at Retired Worker. The most noticeable changes are to our job listings pages. Due to demand we broke up our general "category" option into two new fields. One, "occupation" captures the type of work the job entails and two "industry" gives a general idea of what specific industry the job is in.

We have also massively updated and upgraded our lists of cities and regions. Now you can drill down to over 140 communities across Canada but jobs will still appear, and be able to be searched by over a list of over 50 regions as well.

We hope that all these changes will make it easier for our job-seekers and employers alike.

We are also hard at work at some new features and promotions for this fall. This includes our revamped job-alert feature (notifying job seekers about jobs of interest in their area), our 5th Annual Retired Worker Job-Seeker Survey and our "Harvest Experience" promotion.

Forget "40 under 40" - welcome to the Top 80 Over 80!

We've all read features like "The Top 40 Under 40", celebrating movers and shakers in the business world. The Top 30 Under 30, 20 Under 20 - most of these rankings are designed to highlight people who have achieved great things at a young age.

But this month, online newsmagazine Slate.com is offering a new twist: The Top 80 Over 80.

And it's about time.

Here are the top 5 (Slate is based in the US, so there aren't many Canadians on the list, but it's still worth a look):

  1. John Paul Stevens, age 88
You probably haven't heard of him, but as an Associate Supreme Court justice since 1975, Stevens authored the most-cited opinion in American law, and has had a huge influence over US law for more than 30 years.

  2. Kirk Kerkorian, age 91
The 41st-richest person in the world. At age 83, bought Steve Wynn's Mirage Resorts for $6.4 billion, and gave $200 million to the people of Armenia.

  3. T. Boone Pickens, age 80
With a fortune of $4 billion, Pickens is still trying to change the world by investing $58 million in developing alternative energy sources.

  4. Si Newhouse, Jr., age 80
Chairman of the company which owns magazine empire Conde Nast.

  5. Sumner Redstone, age 85
Media and entertainment mogul, who is supposedly 'retired' but still keeps making billion-dollar deals (like his purchase of DreamWorks studios for $1.5 billion in 2006).
