A number of changes to taxation rates, plans and subsidies relating to older workers were introduced in the 2008 Canadian Federal budget. These changes include increased abbility to unlock parts or all of LIF (Life Income Fund) under some conditions and increases to the threshold for GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) from $500 to $3,500.

Additionally the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers program, designed to assist older workers to find work in areas of high unemployment has been extended until 2011.
