Retired Worker Newsletter
January 22, 2009

2009 is shaping up to be a great year for older workers!

Retired Worker tends to slow down over the Christmas holidays, as many of our job-seekers take some downtime to spend with friends and family.

Of course, one of the topics that came up over the holidays was "What will the tight economy mean for older workers?" We've all seen the daily media reports of layoffs and cutbacks, so it's only natural to wonder if the job market is going to be more difficult for 50+ job-seekers - especially given that it's only been in the past 2 or 3 years that employers have really started to recognize the value that older workers bring to the workplace.

Now that we're well into 2009, we've got some good news: It looks like older workers are more popular than ever!

In a tight economy, many employers turn to contract or temporary resources (rather than permanent, full-time employees) when they have a vacancy. While your average 30-something may not be interested in, say, a 6-month contract position, many older job-seekers find contract positions a perfect fit with their lifestyle. So we expect the market for 50+ job-seekers to continue to improve right through the rest of 2009.

New JobAlerts Coming In February

Our new revamped JobAlerts feature will be rolled out in February. For those job seekers who wish, once a week you can be notified by email of the latest jobs in your area.

As we continue to develop this feature we are hoping to allow job seekers to select from monthly, weekly or daily updates on the jobs that interest them the most.
